COLUMBIA — Carmen Shaw Wood, 95, passed away Saturday, November 3, 2012. Funeral Services will be at 2 pm, Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at Wilkes Boulevard United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 12:30 to 2 pm Wednesday at the church. Burial will follow in Columbia Cemetery.
Carmen was born September 2, 1917 in Columbia, MO to Willie and Florence Shaw. She graduated Salutatorian of the Hickman High School class of 1935 and went on to become Departmental Secretary for the University of Missouri College of Agricultural Engineering, where she was a mentor to many a student and professor alike. Carmen was an avid reader and worked at Daniel Boone Regional Library after her retirement.
She was devoted to serving as Past President to Rebekah Assembly of the State of Missouri. All who knew Carmen knew of her deep faith. She believed that God’s grace extended to ALL people and was an active member of Wilkes Boulevard United Methodist Church for most of her life serving as Certified Lay Speaker and working with United Methodist Women. Every member of her family went to sleep at night knowing that Mom/Carmen/Nanny had prayed for them by name.
She loved all things purple, especially violets and was a master crossword puzzler. She is cherished by her four children: Jerry Wood and his wife, Martha of Rogers, MN, Phil Wood and his wife Barbara of Columbia, Caryl Bryan and her husband Jim of Columbia and Cathy Bigger and her husband Jack of Athens, OH. She was loved as Nanny by her grandchildren and their families: Jeff and Fran Wood, Janey and John Belde, Andy and Erin Bryan, Matt and Kim Wood, Stephanie Bryan, Amanda and Brad Atkins, Brad Bryan and Brynn Hamilton and Nathan and Krista Bigger and her 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers and sisters and her husband, Glenn Wood.
