Boone County Fire Protection District firefighters responded to a fire that destroyed a farmhouse at 9600 S. Smith Hatchery Road Monday afternoon south of Columbia.

After receiving the call around 4:12 p.m., county firefighters arrived at the scene to find that the fire had spread to most of the farmhouse. Determining that it was unsafe to enter the farmhouse, firefighters took "defensive operations" to extinguish the fire from the outside, Fire District battalion chief Gale Blomenkamp said.

No one was injured, and the farmhouse was used to store equipment, Blomenkamp said. Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire.
