COLUMBIA — A 16-year-old was airlifted to University Hospital after she fell 25 to 30 feet outside the entrance of Devil's Icebox in Rock Bridge Memorial State Park on Friday afternoon.

Fire District Battalion Chief Gale Blomenkamp said responders were called at 4:05 p.m. by the victim's friend, who was with her at the time of the fall.

The victim suffered multiple scrapes and bumps and was in and out of consciousness. Firefighters carried her to the parking lot, and she was flown to the hospital to check for a potential head injury.

The victim's friend said the victim tried to join her on a ledge in the cave and slipped on a pile of wet leaves, which caused her to fall.

Blomenkamp said these types of injuries are common and urged visitors to be cautious when hiking, paying special attention to footing on the park terrain.

He did not have any more information about the victim's condition Saturday morning and said he did not know the victim's name.
