COLUMBIA — Two masked individuals broke into a home in the 2000 block of Carol Drive around 1 a.m. Monday, according to police.

They forced their way in the back door, displayed handguns and demanded property from victims, according to a news release from the Columbia Police Department.

No property was taken from the home, but one of the suspects shot a male victim in the leg. The victim was taken to a local hospital, but his injuries are not life threatening, the release said.

No arrests have been made and the Forensic Evidence Team and investigators are looking into the incident.

At about the same time early Monday morning, officers were called to a disturbance between a male and female at 1427 Bodie Drive. Police said in a news release that the male, identified as Stephen Mitchell, 24, choked the pregnant woman, 23. The female victim, her two young children and the suspect’s brother were able to get out of the house and call the police.

The suspect then barricaded himself in the home, but did not threaten to shoot anyone but himself with the weapon, the release said.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Boone County Sheriff’s Department attempted to make contact with Mitchell, but were unsuccessful. Officers cleared the area and left the suspect in the residence just before 5 a.m.
