Mickie Jenkins contributed time, service to Columbia

COLUMBIA— Mickie Jenkins of Columbia died Friday, Nov. 23, 2012. She was 88.

Mrs. Jenkins was born March 7, 1924 in Lutesville-Marble Hill to Billie and James Higgins.

She played varsity volleyball at Lutesville High School until she graduated in 1941 as an honors student. She attended MU.

She was married to Thornton Jenkins for 69 years.

Mrs. Jenkins worked as a realtor for Mendenhall Realty. She also worked in Columbia Public Schools and at Buchroeder Jewelers.

She traveled with friends and was active in King's Daughters, Republican Women, various women's circles, tennis leagues, Boone Hospital volunteers and served as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader. She taught junior high Sunday school classes at Missouri United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Jenkins is survived by her husband, Thornton Jenkins; daughter, Spring Jenkins Walton and husband Charles Walton, of Columbia and Baltimore; a brother, James Higgins and wife Florrie Bonney of Potosi; nieces and nephews, Cindy Higgins, Joel Mulhern, Jane Morrow, Brent Morrow, Jim Stone, Jim Higgins, Susan Higgins, Christopher Higgins, Sarah Higgins, Kim Moffett and Eric Moffett and grand nieces and nephews.

Her siblings, John Higgins, Lynn Higgins and Dorothy Bloomquist died earlier.

Memorial contributions can be made to Rheumatoid Arthritis - Arthritis Foundation, to the Reading is Fundamental program or any charity.
