COLUMBIA — A Columbia man was injured after falling asleep while driving on Interstate 70 westbound Monday evening in Callaway County.

Gregory Kirchhofer's 2006 Suburban went off the right side of the highway, down an embankment, across the outer road and into a wooded area at 7:45 p.m., according to a report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

A semi-truck driver who was behind Kirchhofer pulled over, called 911 and stayed until firefighters arrived, Highway Patrol trooper David Fouch said.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol arrived about 8 p.m. Firefighters and an ambulance arrived on the scene soon after, Fouch said. Kirchhofer was conscious and talking to firefighters.

"He was stuck in there," Fouch said. "The firefighters had to cut him out of the vehicle."

Kirchhofer was taken by ambulance to University Hospital. He was in serious condition when he arrived, but he was in fair condition Tuesday morning, a hospital representative said.
