Columbia College men's basketball ranked No. 2 in NAIA

Columbia College coach Bob Burchard has the Cougars at 16-0 and ranked No. 2 nationally in the NAIA.

COLUMBIA — The Columbia College men's basketball team, off to the best start at 16-0, moved up four spots to No. 2 in the latest NAIA Top 25 poll released Tuesday, the highest ranking for the program.

It is the first time the Cougars, one of two undefeated teams left this season, have appeared in the top five since 2004.

Columbia College received four of 11 first-place votes and 265 points overall in the poll, finishing just behind top-ranked Cumberlands (Ky.) University. The Patriots moved up one spot from the previous poll on Dec. 11, 2012.  

Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) College, which moved up eight spots to No. 3, is the other undefeated squad with an 18-0 record. Oklahoma Baptist University, previously ranked No. 1, and Pikeville (Ky.) College rounded out the top five.

Columbia College is off to a 2-0 start in the American Midwest Conference with wins over William Baptist (Ark.) College and Park (Mo.) University.

The Cougars are set to play Benedictine-Springfield (Ill.) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Arena of Southwell Complex.
