LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Red Cross seeking funds to recoup United Way loss

COLUMBIA — Responding to disasters and meeting the immediate emergency needs of those impacted by catastrophic events are major components of the services provided by the American Red Cross Heart of Missouri Chapter.

The Red Cross now is seeking assistance from individuals and businesses in Boone, Cooper and Howard counties to replace approximately $90,000 we lost when the United Way based in Columbia changed its funding model.

Chapter officials formed the United Way Recovery Committee, and we have outlined a plan to recoup those lost funds.

The plan includes a workplace giving campaign and personal meetings with as many individuals and businesses as possible in Boone, Cooper and Howard counties – the area served by the Columbia-based United Way.

Dedicated Red Cross volunteers are available every day of the year and at all hours to provide emergency food, clothing and shelter at no cost to clients in 21 mid-Missouri counties served by the chapter, which includes Boone, Cooper and Howard.

The Red Cross receives no government funding — at any level. Our mission, which also includes programs such as Service to Armed Forces and health and safety classes, is funded through the generosity of the American public.

We are committed to assisting clients in Boone, Cooper and Howard counties, and because we have given our word to serve, there will be no loss or reduction of Red Cross programs in those areas.

The loss of $90,000 will, however, put a strain on the chapter’s budget.

I am asking anyone who reads this letter to consider helping the Red Cross help a neighbor on what could be the darkest day of their life.

No donation is too small and all are appreciated.

Thank you.
