I was living in the city at the time some of its schools were starting to desegregate. I was a resource person for a PTA group that was having some student disciplinary problems. In the middle of a heated meeting, someone brought up the subject of guns in school, and within a matter of minutes, the conversation deteriorated into a discussion about the possibility of parents taking up arms to protect the student body.
Although that was a long time ago, I felt the same way about guns in schools as I do today. Schools are laboratories for learning, not armed camps. When we can no longer provide safe places for children to learn, then we need to keep our children at home.
Americans seem to love violence. Otherwise, they could not create such violent toys for children to play with. Video games where children attack each other and play war games are atrocious. Some parents allow children to gather in rooms and play these games for hours.
And frankly, I don’t know why some children would not have mental problems. They are allowed to sit in homes where noise from radios, televisions, and video games are blaring constantly. They’re hardly ever safe from noise. They don’t take naps. Ultimately, it seems to me that psychologists will have to become a part of every school’s staff to keep children safe. Certainly, children should be tested constantly to determine what this noise is doing to their brains.
Some parents, especially in rural areas, pride themselves on teaching their children to shoot firearms. The world is much more populated these days, and people are closer together. Care has to be taken to see that rules are observed. Areas have to be made safe for these kind of activities.
Many parents are careless with their guns. They place them in unlocked areas where children can gain access to them. Often, they leave their firearms loaded where children can find them. Children playing with guns is a scary possibility.
I really don’t care for hearing people talk about taking up arms against the government. In the minds of some, this is the purpose of a militia in 2013. People who have problems with certain members of other political parties are translating the Second Amendment in some strange ways. Having all these weapons on hand can have some serious repercussions.
I think it’s sad that some citizens have already placed armed guards in their schools. To me, that is admitting that we have created a society that is out of control and that we are no longer able to keep it in line. Certainly, we should never have allowed assault guns to be sold, and everyone who owns a gun should have a background check. Obviously, we need to take care of these omissions.
Hopefully, we can do something about these guns and shooters. We are a country of laws. People must be held accountable. The last place we need guns is in schools. That’s the place for books.
