Fire destroys home on La Porte Avenue

COLUMBIA — A fire destroyed a home in north Columbia on Tuesday afternoon.

Gale Blomenkamp, Boone County Fire Protection District division chief, who was covered in soot from battling the blaze, said the fire at 7875 N. La Porte Ave. was a big one; 32 firefighters, two fire engines and two medics responded.

The fire began in the kitchen and quickly spread, Fire District Chief Scott Olsen said. Pamela Beasley, the owner of the house, had stepped out on the porch before the fire started. The flames engulfed the kitchen before she could react, Olsen said.

Anthony Beasley, Pamela Beasley’s husband, was not at home during the fire. The Beasleys have been displaced by the fire and are living in a hotel for now. They are insured.

The Fire District was called at 3:14 p.m. by a passerby.

The house was hollowed out by the flames by the time the emergency crews had arrived; there was a lot of collapse in the structure, Olsen said. No one was injured in the fire.
