Mildred Hullender remembered as caring mother

COLUMBIA — Mildred Hullender was a devoted Christian and caring mother.

She dressed up her six children for church several times a week, her daughter Suzanne Hullender said. Mrs. Hullender was a member of Parkade Baptist Church. Later in life she lived at the Baptist Home in Ironton.

Mrs. Hullender, of Columbia, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2013. She was 91.

"Even when she was suffering from a mental disorder in her last days, she was always gentle and warm,” Suzanne Hullender, said.

Mrs. Hullender was born Jan. 7, 1922, in Butler, Okla. She married Haywood "Strick" Hullender on Feb. 14, 1941. Haywood Hullender, a World War II veteran, died in 2011.

She won 1939 Cotton Queen beauty pageant in Tillman County, Okla. She was a nurse's aid at Highland General Hospital in Pempa, Texas.

Suzanne Hullender said her mother taught her children to make "wise decisions with integrity."

“She showed us how to deal with challenges,” she said.

She is survived by two sons, H.S. Hullender Jr. and his wife, Linda, of Dallas, and Jeff Hullender and his wife, Constance, of Hot Springs, N.C.; four daughters, Suzanne Hullender of Jefferson City, Jo Fretwell of Demoplois, Ala., Vicki Craine and her husband, Bill, of Hawaii and Jean Thompson and her husband, Coy, of Highland, Ill.; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as nieces and nephews.

Her husband, Haywood Hullender, died earlier.

A visitation with a service to follow will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Friday at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Jan. 24 at the Baptist Home, 101 Riggs Scott Lane, Ironton, Mo.
