COLUMBIA — Nicola "Nikki" Sheryl Bappe of Columbia died of complications from pulmonary fibrosis on Jan. 14, 2013, at Boone Hospital Center. She was 45.

She was born May 18, 1967, in Blantyre, Malawi, Africa. She met Marine Corps Sgt. Andrew Bappe during his service in Riyadh, Saudia Arabia. They married on Aug. 20, 1994, in Minnesota.

Mrs. Bappe's daughter Jodie, 15, created a fundraising campaign to raise awareness about her family's situation in October; Mrs. Bappe had a lung disease called Interstitial Pulmonary Pneumonia and Jodie's father, Drew Bappe, has stage-four throat cancer. The campaign raised $8,081 and raised awareness of the family's medical situation in the community.

An event called "Caroling for a Cause" was held at the Bappe's house on Dec. 20. Neighbors and friends gathered to sing Christmas carols and collect donations in a Santa hat.

Mrs. Bappe was qualified as a registered nurse in Colchester, England. She worked as a unit secretary at Boone Hospital from December 2005 until August of 2012.

She is survived by her husband, Drew Bappe, and four children, Francois, Andre, Joshua and Jodie.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Columbia Seventh Day Adventist Church, 1100 College Park Drive.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Central Missouri Humane Society, 616 Big Bear Blvd., Columbia, MO 65202. Online tributes may be left at www.memorialfunderalhomeandcemetery.com.
