Harold Virgen enjoyed sports, cared for family, friends

COLUMBIA — Harold Glenn Virgen was a passionate golfer and sports fan, but his interests always came back to his family and friends.

Mr. Virgen of Columbia died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013. He was 78.

He was born Aug. 20, 1934, in Tunas, Mo., to Clifford G. and Bonnie B. Cobb Virgen.

He married Lavona L. Hensley on March 16, 1957, in Springfield.

He served in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1957 t0 1959.

Mr. Virgen was a graduate of Southwest Missouri State University. Later, he was a high school teacher and coach. 

He later served numerous VA hospitals throughout the country for 33 years. He retired as the human resources director at the Truman Veterans Hospital in Columbia in 1994. 

As an active member of the community, he was a board member, deacon and elder of Broadway Christian Church.

He was also a board member of the Missouri Credit Union and a national association of retired federal employees. 

He served on the Lenoir Long-Range Planning Committee and the "Aging in Place" advisory committee at the Sinclair School of Nursing at MU.

Mr. Virgen is survived by his wife, Lavona, of Columbia; two daughters, Kathleen Martin and her husband, Michael, of Colorado Springs, and Sandra Woolen and her husband, Robin, of Kansas City; a granddaughter, Jennifer Pace of Columbia; and two brothers-in-law, Stephen Lange and Bruce Hensley and his wife, Sara.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Jan. 26 at Broadway Christian Church, 2601 W. Broadway. Memorial contributions can be made to Broadway Christian Church.
