COLUMBIA — Neighbors on Garth Avenue near Park Hill Avenue were inside playing games and watching movies when the sound of police sirens and metal-on-metal collisions drew them into the 20 degree weather Monday afternoon.
Troopers chased a stolen white Cadillac CTS from Interstate 70 south through Business Loop 70 to Garth Avenue. The Cadillac reached more than 70 mph before colliding with four cars, said Trooper Grant Johnson of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, who initiated the pursuit.
Once the car had stopped, the driver jumped out and fled through Columbia Cemetery before being captured by police at the cemetery’s east side.
Suspects Anthony Jacobs and Diamon Davis were being held in police custody, Johnson said.
Jacobs is on probation for a four-year sentence for second-degree burglary, theft, property damage and resisting arrest, among other charges.
One car, a Mazda Protege, rested under a tree in one front yard, its bumper detached and its hood bent.
Dan Nerling was driving home from baseball card shopping when Jacobs sideswiped his car and blew out the back tire. Nerling had just bought his white 2007 VW Jetta a month earlier, he said.
“What an inconvenience for someone to be taking a joy ride,” Nerling said.
