COLUMBIA — The Columbia Public School District is investigating what led to an altercation after Tuesday night's boys basketball game between Hickman and Rock Bridge high schools.

Columbia Police Department spokeswoman Latisha Stroer said the investigation is being handled by district officials and school resource officers.

The incident broke out when Hickman students stormed the Rock Bridge High School basketball court Tuesday night following the Kewpies' three-overtime victory.

All district athletic events and extracurricular activities are equipped with certain security measures, said Michelle Baumstark, Columbia Public School District spokeswoman.

Seven police officers, two safety and security officers and numerous school district personnel were present for Tuesday's basketball game.

The district did not plan any increased security for Wednesday night's girls basketball game at Hickman between the two teams, she said.

"We had a situation that got a little out of control," Baumstark said. "You have just a few individuals involved, and it can taint the experience for a larger number of individuals, where otherwise it would have been a very positive experience."

Baumstark said it's unclear what exactly happened.

"We've had administrators talking to kids today, talking to adults involved in the situation, reviewing videos, reviewing photos, trying to determine exactly what happened, so that if we do take disciplinary action, that it is appropriate," she said.

No one was injured in the fight, but the district intends to have a conversation with an older woman involved in the beginning of the incident.

"We've had incidents over the years where we do have a handful of parents that get out of hand," Baumstark said. "Part of our procedures is to ask them not to attend future events."

Supervising editor is Zach Murdock.
