Billie Shelton enjoyed volunteer work, cared for family, animals

COLUMBIA — Billie Shelton was a charming, social woman. She was actively involved in volunteer organizations and let her love for animals show.

Mrs. Shelton died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013. She was 96.

She was born Aug. 22, 1916, in Honey Grove, Texas.

On July 21, 1940, she married W. Herschel Shelton. They moved from Dallas to Tulsa, Okla., in the late 1940s.

Mrs. Shelton supported her husband as he served as vice-president of Spartan Aircraft and later as co-owner and president of Mobile International Inc.

She was active in the Tulsa Garden Club, Tulsa Boys' Home and Animal Aid of Tulsa. She loved her dogs, especially her favorite Cavelier King Charles Spaniel, Katie.

In 2007, Mrs. Shelton moved to Columbia, where she resided until her death.

Mrs. Shelton is survived by her daughter, Karen Shelton Rader and husband, Jerome, of Columbia.

Her husband and a brother, Jewell Wheeler, died earlier.

A private service was held in Tulsa. Memorial donations can be made to the Central Missouri Humane Society, 616 Big Bear Blvd  Columbia, MO 65202 or Animal Aid of Tulsa, 3307 E. 15th St., Tulsa, OK 74112.
