Fire at law firm shuts down Walnut Street

Walnut Street was shut down for several blocks for more than an hour as four trucks and 19 firefighters responded to a fire, which was called in about 8 p.m.

COLUMBIA — A single-alarm fire at 609 Walnut St., the offices of Trapp Law Firm, sent smoke pouring out of the building's roof and shut down Walnut Street between Fifth and Seventh streets Thursday night. 

Four trucks responded to the blaze at 8 p.m. Firefighters contained the fire by 8:40 p.m., and were ensuring the fire had not extended beyond the building as of 9:10 p.m.

Battalion Chief James Weaver said he doesn't believe the building is equipped with sprinklers because it is one of the older buildings on the block.

Weaver said he did not yet know the cause of the fire, whether the building sustained damage or when Walnut Street would reopen.
