COLUMBIA — When Shirley George's daughter was going through a difficult childbirth, she didn't leave the girl's side during the entire ordeal.

As a child, Mrs. George would help her brothers and sisters up a steep hill to their house, even warming their hands after the long climb.

"She was always helping someone," said her sister, Ester Level. "She was there for anyone that needed her." Level recalled that her sister was a support system for all her brothers and sisters, as well as her husband and daughter, and never complained.

Shirley (Todd) George, of Columbia, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013. She was 78.

Mrs. George was born Jan 31, 1934, in Brown Station, Mo., to Edgar and Annie Lee (Penrod) Todd. She grew up in Clifton City, Mo. and later moved to Columbia.

She spent most her life as a saleswoman for companies such as Avon and J.C. Penney and Co. Level said she had "a hard life, but a great one."

Mrs. George married Charles Franklin George in 1950.

"She loved to dance. They'd go square dancing. They loved to go down to the little town down by the river," Level said.

The couple had one daughter, Charlotte. Level recalled her sister's relationship with her daughter as a strong one.

"She was the pride and joy of her life. They were inseparable," her sister said. "She was just a beautiful woman. She was amazing is all I can say."

Mrs. George is survived her daughter, Charlotte Darby; two brothers, Charles R. and Floyd Todd; one sister, Ester Level; brother-in-law Ray George; two grandchildren, Jack Hathman III and Jeremy Hathman; one great-grandchild, Callista Ann Hathman; and several nieces and nephews.

Her husband, parents, two brothers, Carl and Sherman, and two sisters, Ellen and Cathy, died earlier.

Services will be held conducted by the Rev. David Hartgrove at 1 p.m. Jan. 26 at Nilson Funeral Home, 5611 E. St Charles Road.
