COLUMBIA — Columbia College raised more than $3,000 for the American Cancer Society through its Coaches vs. Cancer event last week.

Coaches vs. Cancer is a partnership between the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the American Cancer Society. At the encouragement of the National Association of Basketball Coaches, Columbia College and visiting William Woods University coaches wore sneakers on Saturday.

The Cougars took donations on campus throughout the week leading up to the men's and women's games Saturday. The athletics department sold paper cut-outs of sneakers that lined a wall of the Arena at Southwell Complex. Fans who purchased cards wrote the names of someone they wanted to recognize or honor. After the women's game, fans were encouraged to come down to the court and donate money.

Columbia College raised more than $1,200 during last year's event.
