Russ Jones' refurbishing hobby gradually became a business, Furniture R-USs.

COLUMBIA — Piles of furniture and boards cluster around Russ Jones’ shop and house. His attic is filled with dozens of chairs. After Jones refinished a bench for his home almost three years ago, his hobby has grown into a business.

Jones picks up furniture from lots of places such as garage sales and home foreclosures. Then, he refurbishes, refinishes and repurposes the items to sell. Friends sometimes bring him furniture, especially chairs.

"People just bring me chairs," he said. "I'm the chair guy."

Jones calls his hobby-turned-business Furniture R-USs. A locksmith by day, Jones works with wood in the afternoons and weekends. His buyers range from college students to furniture enthusiasts from all over the U.S.

Jones used to refurbish all kinds of furniture. Now he has decided to focus on higher quality items rather than quantity, he said, such as antiques. One of his recent projects was an oak Gothic revival frame from a Catholic church.

"Anything that goes out of this driveway, I want to be proud of," Jones said.
