COLUMBIA — Around 3 p.m. Wednesday, Columbia Police officers responded to a report of a fight near Fifth Street and Park Avenue.

Police received a call regarding a fight involving a knife, according to a Columbia Police Department news release. By the time officers arrived at the scene, the incident was over.

A bystander told police a 14-year-old boy was involved in the incident. When the responding officer tried to detain him, he ran and the officer pursued, according to the release.

The suspect was taken into custody, but officers were unable to confirm a knife was involved in the fight.

Administrators at Jefferson Junior High School also responded to reports of a fight near the school, but it had dispersed by the time they arrived at the scene, Jefferson Junior High School Principal Greg Caine said.

Officers are still investigating the incident, according to the release.

Supervising editor is Zach Murdock.
