Ten Columbia wrestlers earn spots in high school state meet

COLUMBIA — Columbia wrestlers captured seven individual titles in this weekend's district tournament competitions to advance to next weekend's state meet. 

Hickman and Rock Bridge each had three wrestlers win championships at the Class 4, District 3 tournament at Jefferson City High School, while Fr. Tolton Catholic had one champion at the Class 1, District 1 tournament at Whitfield High School.

The Bruins Jason Kiehne won the 132-pound division with a 6-3 decision over Mac Diaz of Raymore-Peculiar, while Rock Bridge's defending state champion, Samuel Crane, scored an impressive pin over Jeff Held of Central Springfield at 138 pounds. Meanwhile, Cody Maly won the 185-pound title for the Bruins with a pin over top-seeded Andrew Erxleben of Northwest Cedar Hill.

Freshman Josiah Kline won a title for Hickman with a major decision over Charles McNeal of Waynesville at 106 pounds, and the Kewpies' Alex Shea won the 145-pound title with an 8-3 victory over Cameron White of Nixa. Hickman's three-time state champion J'den Cox won the heavyweight division with a pin over Jacob Semple of Waynesville.

Tolton's Jaydin Clayton won the 132-pound title at the Class 1 competition with an impressive 20-5 technical fall over Derrick Swaney of Whitfield.

Other Columbia wrestlers who qualified for next weekend's state tournament by finishing in the top four of their weight divisions included Rock Bridge's Quinn Smith, who finished third in the 126-pound division and Kyle Johnston, who finished second in the 160-pound division. Will Tindal of Tolton also qualified, finishing second in the 160-pound division.
