COLUMBIA — Carolyn Ruth Blount was an intelligent and witty woman, who enjoyed traveling and loved her family.

“She was highly intelligent, gifted musically. She gave the gift of music to me and its importance,” her daughter, Julie Marshall said. “Very funny, and witty. If things got too serious, she would always make a joke.”

Mrs. Blount died Friday, Jan. 25, 2013. She was 83 years old.

Mrs. Blount was born on March 2, 1929, in Philadelphia, Pa., to James and Ella Marie (Gibbs) Middleton. She came to Mexico, Mo., at an early age.

She attended MU, graduated with a degree in dietetics and received several awards for academic excellence.

Mrs. Blount interned at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago. She then married her university sweetheart, Don Blount, in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Mrs. Blount became a civilian dietitian in what is now Fort Carson, Colo. She was the only person to have that status. After her husband fulfilled his active duty responsibilities in the Army Medical Corp, she returned to Columbia and devoted herself to being a mother to her children and helping her husband, who was in graduate school.

“She was not only my mother, but my best friend,” Marshall said. “We were very close and all the family used to kid us that we were never more than a foot apart."

Mrs. Blount’s life was full of excitement and adventure. She enjoyed traveling to places where her ancestors had lived in Scotland. She and her husband traveled to England, Scotland and Wales. They enjoyed getting off the main road and exploring small towns where they stopped to talk to others and made new friends.

Don Blount recalls going into a pub in a little town close to Aberdeen, Scotland.  They went into the pub looking for some of Mrs. Blount’s ancestors. Don Blount recalls asking the bartender if there were any Middleton relatives around. The room was silent for a minute and then the bartender started pointing out all the Middletons in the room.

Mrs. Blount is survived by her husband, Don Blount, of Columbia; three children, Andy Blount of Columbia, David Blount of the state of Oregon, and Julie Marshall of Roswell, Ga.; her sister, Virginia, and brother, James Middleton.

Memorial donations may be made to the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri, 2101 Vandiver Drive, Columbia, MO 65202.
