The Stephens College basketball team controlled the opening half with their suffocating defense and found enough offense to win Tuesday evening against Benedictine (Ill.) Springfield, 50-40, at Silverthorne Arena.
The Stars (6-19, 3-11 AMC) jumped out to an early lead in the opening half and controlled the action through strong defensive play, heading into the break with a 23-8 lead. Benedictine (3-21, 0-14 AMC) made a run in the second half and managed to close the deficit, but it wasn't enough as Stephens won courtesy of six three-pointers and 12 assists.
Stephens used a balanced attack and was led by guard Taylor Payne's ten points. Loran Blagg chipped in with nine points for the Stars, while Jenna Zmyslony and Andie Young added eight apiece to continue Benedictine's winless conference record.
Brittany Rush scored a game-high 14 points for the Bulldogs in their losing effort.
The Stars will play Harris-Stowe State University at 7 p.m. Thursday in St. Louis.
