Walter (Tom) Buchanan of Columbia passed away peacefully in his home on February 12, 2013. Tom was born in Moberly, MO on October 27, 1932. He was a very loving husband and a proud father and grandfather.

He earned a BS, MS, and PHD from the University of Missouri. After graduating, he served in the US Army as a Captain in the Army Corps of Engineers. He started his civil engineering career and worked in New York and Iowa for Pittsburg-Des Moines Steel. Tom returned to St. Joseph, MO on September 2, 1969, to begin as an industrial specialist for University of Missouri Extension and stayed for 24 years. He served 21 counties in Northwest Missouri. Tom was the fifth off-campus specialist hired in the business and industry program. He finished his career at the University of Illinois Extension as a small business specialist. He received the Meritorious Service Award from the University of Missouri Extension Association in 1970.

Tom served as president of the St. Joseph Rotary Club and attended the Rotary International Convention in Tokyo, Japan in 1978. He was a member of Moila Shrine Temple in St. Joseph, as a 32nd degree Mason.

Because of his love of all Missouri sports, he wanted to retire in Columbia. He enjoyed going to football, basketball, volleyball and baseball games. His second love was playing golf and especially liked if Pat joined him. Traveling was a close third, but he had to plan the travel around the sports schedules unless there was a Bowl game to attend. For the past three years, Tom had to curtail, but not eliminate until this year, his spectator activities because of his continuing battle with Lewy body disease. Tom’s family is most appreciative of the wonderful care he has received from Drs. Scholes and Jamison, Gail Tweeddale and the Integrity aides.

Though Tom had many professional accomplishments, he was known for his honesty, compassion and kindness in all things. His favorite saying was “Are we having fun yet?” with a resounding answer by him of “YES!” His sense of humor and strength of mind and spirit will be missed, but the memories he has provided will live in our hearts forever.

Tom is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Pat; daughters Cindy Secora (Steve), Jenny Malotte and Lori Witham (Ed), six grandchildren - Michael, Kristen, Brad (Julie), Leanne (Josh), Kari and Mitchell; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law Sue and Jeff Wilson; two nephews - Andy and Adam Wilson; and his dog Jasmine.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, February 16th at 1:00 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Home officiated by Rev. Larry A. Williams. Visitation will be held following the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Pat and Tom Buchanan Endowed Fund at the University of Missouri. The fund is used to provide support for professional development for Extension faculty. Contributions can be sent to Missouri University Extension Development, 109 F Whitten Hall, Columbia, MO 65211. Online tributes may be left at
