Missouri baseball loses to Southern Mississippi, falls to 0-2

Missouri baseball head coach Tim Jamieson told reporters Tuesday that his team's goal for opening weekend was to take two of three games from No. 23 Southern Mississippi.

"That's never going to be any different," Jamieson said.

Sunday's Game

Missouri at No. 23 Southern Mississippi

WHEN: 1 p.m. Sunday (Jace James is the projected Missouri starter.)

WHERE: Pete Taylor Park, Hattiesburg, Miss.

RADIO: KTGR/103.1 & 100.5 FM, 1580 AM

Heading into the final game of the weekend Sunday, however, the best the Tigers can do is avoid being swept. Missouri dropped its second game of the weekend Saturday by a score of 5-3, squandering a respectable outing from starting pitcher Brett Graves.

After playing from behind for much of Friday's season opener, the Tigers held the lead against the Golden Eagles through the first six innings Saturday afternoon. With Graves' effectiveness clearly fading, the Tigers handed the ball off to sophomore Ryan Yuengel.

Yuengel struggled with control in the seventh inning, hitting the first batter of the inning and soon walking another. With two runners on base, Southern Mississippi right-fielder Mason Robbins homered over the right field wall, propelling the Golden Eagles into the lead.

Southern Mississippi closer Bradley Roney, a 2012 Freshman All-American, didn't give Missouri a chance to mount a comeback.

Jace James will start for the Tigers on Sunday in the final game of opening weekend at 1 p.m.
