John Dean is the academic achievement chair of the MU Fraternity Alumni Consortium.
The academic achievement banner presentation ceremony was held last week. We were pleased to have stimulating comments by Vice Chancellor Cathy Scroggs and Vice Provost Jim Spain, along with Jackson Hobbs, IFC president. Several alumni and faculty/staff advisers participated, while the honored chapters showed up with delegations of members.
This has become an event at the beginning of each semester, initiated by the MU Fraternity Alumni Consortium in 2010 and supported by the Vice Chancellor student affairs, Greek Life and Inter Fraternity Council. The Consortium is supported by the Vice Provost for undergraduate studies. It is intended to raise focus on the scholastic dimension of the fraternity experience and recognize those chapters whose members collectively distinguish themselves academically.
The banners are displayed outside of the achieving chapters and have created a competitive nature to grades, comparable to other activities such as intramural sports, Greek Week and Homecoming contests, while being an attractive recruiting feature.
Nine chapters received banners at the ceremony. The chapters were picked for having a collective member GPA above the university average. The nine chapters were Beta Theta Pi, Delta Tau Delta, Alpha Epsilon Pi, Lambda Chi Alpha, Sigma Chi, FarmHouse, Alpha Gamma Sigma, Phi Kappa Theta and Acacia.
