Columbia schools will decide Thursday morning about closing for weather

COLUMBIA — Columbia Public Schools will make a decision before 6 a.m. Thursday about whether to close schools because of winter weather conditions.

Spokeswoman Michelle Baumstark said the district will follow its usual "morning of" decision-making process, including driving the roads starting at 4 a.m. and consulting several weather information services.

The district wants to avoid having early dismissals, so the preference, if conditions warrant, is to close the schools for the day, Baumstark said.

"Our primary concern with early dismissals is safety — there are just so many variables with early dismissals," she said.

If schools are closed, the district will let the public know through local media, the district's text messaging system and its website.
