COLUMBIA — In an age when it was rare for women to work outside the home, Catherine L. Hunt wanted a career. After graduating from Stephens College in the early 1950s, she became a corporate secretary in Denver. She went on to become the secretary for the University of Missouri System Board of Curators.
Ms. Hunt was born in Fredericktown in 1933 to Dorothy (Biffle) Hunt and Russell O. Hunt. She died on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, surrounded by friends and family. She was 79.
Ms. Hunt returned to Columbia when she accepted a position as the executive secretary to the UM System Board of Curators. She lived in the city until she died.
Her cousin Barbara Biffle, who became close to Ms. Hunt when Biffle was a child, described her older cousin as a remarkable woman, stylish and elegant, who traveled around the world, learning how to shoot and ski, always learning and always willing to experience exciting new things.
In her travels, Ms. Hunt developed a close circle of many friends from around the world whom she kept in touch with throughout her life. “People who became friends with Catherine were friends for life,” Biffle said.
After her retirement, she also maintained her group of Columbia contacts and friends by attending regular monthly luncheons and gatherings.
Ms. Hunt was an avid reader, and there were books in almost every room in her house. She was devoted to her pet cat, Buster, and she fed the birds, squirrels, raccoons and deer and took care of plants and flowers around her home as well.
Ms.Hunt was also a devoted fan of Missouri sports. Later in life, she became a fan of NASCAR as well, after discovering that she was distantly related to driver Greg Biffle, or “Cousin Greg” as she came to call him.
She is survived by her four cousins, Barbara Biffle and her husband, Don Bennett, of Lincoln, Neb.; Mark Biffle and his wife, Vicky, of Pinedale, Wyo.; Earl Biffle Jr. of Clayton; and Jessie Biffle Bostwick O'Mara and her husband, Joe, of St. Petersburg, Fla.
A private gathering of friends and loved ones will be held at a future date yet to be determined.
