Friday, February 22, 2013 | 2:20 p.m. CST

SPRINGFIELD — A man involved in a shootout with Springfield police is dead after wounding a detective and engaging in a second gun battle with officers.

The Springfield News-Leader reported the man fired at a detective who was serving a search warrant early Friday. The officer was grazed by a bullet and returned fire, striking the suspect.

Police Lt. Ben King said the suspect later emerged from the house and exchanged gunfire again with police. Witnesses said that the second exchange happened at about 8:30 a.m., and authorities confirmed the man's death three hours later.

King said the detective who was grazed by a bullet was treated at the scene.
