The roof of the Break Time on Vandiver and Paris roads partially collapsed. The damage was discovered early Tuesday morning.

COLUMBIA — More than half the canopy over the gas pumps at the Break Time store on the corner of Paris and Vandiver roads collapsed sometime late Monday night or early Tuesday morning. Employees think the collapse was caused by a combination of heavy snow and wind.

The damage occurred while the store was closed, so the exact time of the collapse remains unknown. No injuries have been reported.

Mary Rice, an employee of Break Time, was one of the first to arrive at the shop on Tuesday morning.

“My manager just called me saying the canopy fell in and someone needed to turn of the alarm,” Rice said. “I was the closest one here, so I came.”

Manager Andrea Gatzemeyer learned of the canopy's condition when a friend sent her a picture of the damage around 9 a.m.

“I was shocked,” she said.  “I didn’t know it would be that bad.”

Gatzemeyer was unsure when the store would reopen and expressed concern about the danger of the situation.

“The rest of the roofing could give way easily in the wind ” Gatzemeyer said. “We are worried about the combination of loose power lines and gasoline as well.”

All electricity to the property has been shut off, and access to the store has been blocked.
