FROM READERS: Tim Heinsz Memorial 5K entering its ninth year

Jessica Coghill is the marketing director for the Tim Heinsz Memorial 5K Run/Walk and Jim Devine Memorial Dog Walk.

As an avid runner and owner of an adorable rescue dog, I found that the Tim Heinsz 5K & Dog Walk was a mix of two passions of mine, culminating in one of my favorite events of the year.  Of course running is always a great workout, but what really sealed my love of the event was networking with other runners and dog lovers at the event.  The high energy of the canine and human participants alike make the atmosphere fun and friendly, all the while honoring two professors’ memories and raising money for scholarships. I am honored to be part of organizing such a wonderful event this year.

The 9th Annual Tim Heinsz Memorial 5K Run/Walk & 3rd Annual Jim Devine Dog Walk honors the memory of two of Mizzou Law’s most beloved deans. Tim Heinsz served as dean of the MU School of Law, and was an avid runner. Jim Devine served as associate dean of the school, and was a noted dog lover. Proceeds benefit the Timothy J. Heinsz Scholarship Fund. The event is a fun way to exercise and mingle with other runners in the community. Students enjoy the event because it is a great way to support the law school, as well as network with other runners and attorneys. As a participant last year, I can say first hand how enjoyable the event is for kids, runners, and dogs alike!

Timothy Heinsz was the former dean of the School of Law and Earl F. Nelson Professor of Law and Director of the Center for the Study of Dispute Resolution. Professor Heinsz was highly regarded as one of the University’s outstanding academic leaders and a nationally respected legal scholar. Additionally, Professor Heinsz was an avid runner.

James R. “Jim” Devine was the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and David Ross Hardy Professor of Law and Trial Practice at the School of Law. Professor Devine was highly regarded as one of the University’s outstanding academic leaders and a nationally respected legal scholar. The Dog Walk is aptly named after Jim Devine because of his love for his dogs.

Come one, come all! The 5K Run/Walk and Dog Walk are open to everyone! MU Law students, faculty and staff; MU Law Alumni; the Missouri Bar Association; students, faculty and staff of the University of Missouri; and the entire community. Dogs are welcome, too!

The race will be held 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 20, 2013 in front of Hulston Hall (west side facing Missouri Ave. and the Alumni Center), home of the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Law. For more information, and registration, please visit http://law.missouri.edu/th5k/. This year we will feature a kids fun run as well! Lots of fun for the entire family!
