COLUMBIA — It was only natural for Larry Woods to move south to Tucson, Ariz., for part of the year when he retired. After all, how else could he play golf during the winter?
"He used to leave the office and tell people he was going out of town," said his son, Matthew Woods. "He'd go to the Columbia Country Club, which at the time was a bit outside the city, so he'd technically be 'out of town.'"
It wasn't always so easy for Larry Woods to get to the putting green.
"In his earlier years, he was very busy," Matthew Woods said. "Golf was a big deal to him."
Larry M. Woods died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013. He was 83.
Mr. Woods was born on July, 13, 1929, to Newton Malone Woods and Lorene Minor Woods. Mr. Woods graduated from Hickman High School in 1947. On Jan. 2, 1954, he married Joan Hatfield in Oak Ridge, Tenn. She preceded him in death on April 10, 2006, after 52 years of marriage.
Mr. Woods was a lifelong lawyer, earning his Juris Doctor from the MU School of Law in 1953. He remained involved at Eng & Woods law firm even past his retirement in the 1990s.
"He had been around the block, and he was very knowledgeable," Matthew Woods said. "He didn't beat around the bush. His letters were always very short and to the point."
Jonathan McQuilkin, another lawyer at Eng & Woods, remembered Mr. Woods as a traditional, old-school man.
"Larry would go down to the basement of our law offices and take a page from his old yellow legal pad and use that with a typewriter," Mr. McQuilkin said. "He never really got up to the computer."
Mr. Woods is survived by his children, Leslie Creath Roby and her husband, Brad, Lisa Nelson and her husband, David, Bill Woods and his wife, Susan, and Matthew Woods and his wife, Stacey; 11 grandchildren, Abby Lenger, Tyler Creath, Colin Creath, Ben Baeker, Sarah Nelson, Emily Harding, Ashley Woods, Lisa Jo Woods, Wells Woods, Andrew Woods and Alexandra Woods; and four great-grandchildren, Analise, Madilynn, Liam and Leo.
