FROM READERS: A winter sunrise and hungry birds

An irregular jet trail appears just as the sun was showing up above the tree line.

John Hall frequently photographs his mid-Missouri surroundings, and he has been sharing his images with the Missourian for several years.

It is cold, and the snow is piled high.

Most of what you see in this set of photos is snow, Goldfinch, snow, sunrise, snow, Purple House Finch, snow, Cardinals, snow, and Red Wing Blackbirds and more snow.

I've never seen the Red Wings come to any bird feeder I've ever had, but never have I seen this much snow so late in the season that has stayed around so persistently. A couple of those sunrise photos had an irregular jet trail pass by just as the sun was about to appear above the tree line. My wife and I both thought it appeared that the jet trail was the smoke coming off the sun. See, we've been inside far too long and are beginning to hallucinate.

Oh, I think I forgot to bring up the snow. Did I mention that we have some snow? It was bad, for a Walmart that closes only one day a year had to shut down because of too much snow on the roofs of their buildings. I suggested that rather than sending employees home they give them a shovel and put them on the roof.  My grandson advised me that by putting employees on the roof tops would only put more weight where it wasn't needed.  I told him that it would be incumbent on each shoveler to do it in a hurry to displace enough snow to compensate for the weight they added.  I've heard of companies advertising that were having blow out sales but the flat roof stores around these parts were about to have cave in sales.

I've got the big lens camera peering out the back door toward the bird feeding station, and if I see anything worth sharing I'll send some good photos the next time.
