Columbia College softball has slow start at Gulf Coast Invitational

COLUMBIA — The Columbia College softball team got off to a rough start at the Gulf Coast Invitational in Gulf Shores, Ala., this weekend.

The Cougars (5-4) began pool play on Friday with losses to Spring Hill College and Lindsey Wilson College.

In the first game of the tournament for Columbia College, the Cougars managed only two hits and were shut out 3-0 by Spring Hill College.

The second game of the day did not go any better for the Cougars as they were defeated 9-1 in six innings by Lindsey Wilson College.

The Cougars bounced back on Saturday with wins against Cumberland University and the University of Houston-Victoria.

Columbia College shut out Cumberland College 4-0 in the first game of the day. After the first five innings went scoreless, the Cougars were able to break the tie with two runs in both the six and seventh innings to capture their first victory of the tournament.

In the second matchup of the day, the Cougars took an early lead and never trailed, defeating the University of Houston-Victoria 6-2. Marli Hayes, junior third baseman, lead the Cougars with two hits and two RBI.

Columbia College's 2-2 record in pool play earned a first round matchup on Sunday against Louisiana State University-Alexandria in the silver bracket.

It would be the last game of the tournament for the Cougars as they were defeated 4-3 by the Generals. After trading runs in the the first four innings, the Generals were able to break a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning with two runs in the top half of the inning. The Cougars responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning but that would be the last run of the game for either team.

Columbia College is scheduled to take on Williams Baptist University in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Cougar Softball Field. It is the first home and conference game of the season for the Cougars.
