LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Ian Thomas proven successful in working for community

Sunday, March 24, 2013 | 6:00 a.m. CDT

As citizens of the Fourth Ward for over 40 years, we strongly recommend Ian Thomas to represent our fellow neighbors and voters on the Columbia City Council. We need a young voice with thoughtful and energetic ideas not only for our ward but for the good of the entire city. Ian Thomas is just this kind of person who will work thoughtfully and is known from many of his previous involvements in successful community work. A long time Columbia resident, he is familiar with the needs and issues of our growing city and would be fair in all debates and a good listener.

We would ask that our fellow voters cast your ballots with us in voting for Ian Thomas for the Fourth Ward.

Barbara and Osmund Overby are Columbia residents.

"We need a young voice..."

How does a guy in his 50s qualify as young in a town with an average age of 26?

So who would you prefer to represent the Fourth Ward?

One thing about riding a bicycle everywhere is it keeps you young...

Never said I didn't prefer Ian just pointing out the ridiculous of that statement.

Feeling young is great and all but it is different than actually being young especially when it comes to politics and policy. Someone who has 20-30 years left in our community will most likely approach things differently than a person who has 40-50 years left.

MarkF: One thing about riding a bicycle everywhere is it keeps you young.

I rode one the day before yesterday, but I went to sleep that night and when I woke up it was yesterday. Today is tomorrow if it was yesterday and I don't see any improvement in my age.

When does the "young" part kick in?

This one probably won't stay posted, so read quickly.

Ma Cousin Suzy iz the #%&@ best bicyclist there iz or ever could be. She rides that bicycle of hers EVERYWHERE!

Everyone who knows Suzy sez she peddles it all over town. :)

On a more serious note, for me, I think Jack Hamm has a valid point: Especially folks of my generation - rapidly becoming our next American "Check-Out Generation" - don't represent Columbia's or America's future, whatever that future turns out to be.
