Columbia College softball team swept in doubleheader in California

The Columbia College softball team was swept by Vanguard University on Monday in a doubleheader in Costa Mesa, Calif. The Cougars lost the first game 6-2 and dropped the second game 3-0. The two losses drop Columbia to 5-6 overall.

In Game 1, the Lions scored five runs on four hits in the first inning against Columbia College starter Taylor Richter. Tiffany Urwiler allowed a run on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings of relief, while striking out four and walking two.

The Cougars scored their runs in the bottom of the sixth, when Kristen Eiken doubled home Jamie Holmes and later scored on an RBI single by Whitni Howell.

The Lions limited the Cougars to just five hits in Game 2, senior Karina Veit going 2-for-3 to lead the Cougars' offense. Cougars starter Amber Boehme allowed three runs on six hits in the loss, striking out three and walking one.

Columbia College is set to play California State-San Marcos on Wednesday in the next game of its West Coast road trip.
