COLUMBIA — A Columbia man was taken into custody Wednesday evening after a strong-arm robbery occurred near The Blue Fugue at 120 S. Ninth St., according to a news release from police.

An 18-year-old man told police that a man with facial tattoos and a bandana assaulted him and took an undisclosed amount of money while he was standing on the sidewalk.

A block away, police found a suspect, Dean Wilmoth, 35. Police said Wilmoth fit the description of the robber and had the exact amount of money stolen in his pocket. Police said they took Wilmoth to a hospital where he spat on an officer.

Wilmonth was arrested in connection with robbery in the second degree and third-degree assault of a law enforcement officer. Wilmoth's bond has been set at $500.

Wilmoth's prior history includes pleading guilty to DWI charges in 2003 and 2010 and a third-degree assault charge in 1999.
