Originally named the Central Missouri Food Bank, the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri was created in 1981 as a class project for Columbia College’s Social Work Department. The project resulted in the collaboration between local churches and the Central Missouri Counties Human Development Corporation.
In its first one and a half years of service, the Food Bank distributed 39,000 pounds of donated food through 15 hunger-relief agencies. Today, the Food Bank distributes more than 28 million pounds of food per year to 135 agencies and 138 schools in 32 counties.
The Food Bank collects food from individuals and corporations, then distributes it to needy families every month, free of charge, through hunger-relief agencies.
Special Food Bank programs include Buddy Packs, which provides backpacks full of food for children to take home for weekends and holidays, and Summer Food 4 Kids, which provides food to children when school is out for the summer.
