Clements memorial service affects traffic, school dismissal

Friday, April 5, 2013 | 1:08 p.m. CDT

COLUMBIA — The Columbia Police Department issued a statement advising drivers to take alternate routes in the area of Nifong Boulevard and Sinclair Road from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday.

Police expect heavy traffic in the area because of the 4 p.m. memorial service for Tom Clements, former Columbia resident and longtime Missouri prison director, who was shot and killed in his Colorado home March 19.

Because the memorial service will take place near Mill Creek Elementary School, administrators planned to dismiss students early. Michelle Baumstark, spokesperson for the district, said parents were notified of the early dismissal and were advised to pick up their children at 3 p.m. The buses will start running at the normal time, from 3:30 p.m. to 3:40 p.m.
