COLUMBIA — Central Missouri Community Action Head Start is accepting applications in Columbia for the 2013-2014 program year.

Head Start is a federal program that promotes school readiness for young children from low-income families. Children from ages 3 to 5 can participate in part-day or full-day classes, as well as educational services at home. Some services are also available to infants and toddlers through the Early Head Start program.

Through Head Start, children receive medical and dental care, healthy meals and snacks and can play and learn in a safe setting.

The program also provides support to families, including training and opportunities to enhance parenting and job skills.

There are more than 1,500 Head Start programs nationwide and more than 1 million children are served every year, according to the Missouri Head Start Association.

To apply for the Head Start program in Columbia, contact any of the following Central Missouri Community Action locations:

  • Park Avenue Head Start: 449-1575
  • Worley Head Start: 443-1955
  • Bear Creek Head Start: 442-6399
