COLUMBIA — Missouri baseball outfielder Sal Belfonte has decided to leave the team, a team spokesman confirmed Tuesday.
Belfonte, a junior from Kansas City, quit the team before the Tigers left for their three-game series against Tennessee on March 22. Team spokesman Shawn Davis called Belfonte's decision "a personal choice for him."
Belfonte got off to a hot start in 2013, hitting .375 in Missouri's season-opening series at Southern Mississippi, but ultimately saw his numbers and playing time diminish. Belfonte appeared in a total of nine games and started six for the Tigers in 2013 prior to his departure. He hit .160 in 25 at-bats, including a double and seven strikeouts.
