- In 2006, we headed west to Richmond, the self-proclaimed Mushroom Capital of the World to take part in its annual Mushroom Festival. This year, it will be held the weekend of May 2-5 and will mark the town's 33rd festival.

- Stan Hudson, a local mushroom expert, runs a well-trafficked blog, Mid-Missouri Morels and Mushrooms about morel hunting that features photographs, stories and other useful information; we followed him along on a hunt in 2010 and attended a class about hunting and cooking techniques he put on in 2011. The 2010 story won Best Story About Rural Life or Agriculture at the Missouri Press Foundation's Better Newspaper Contest.
