ST. LOUIS — St. Louis Zoo officials are describing a 251-pound newborn as petite.

Mammal curator Martha Fischer notes that the 38-inches tall elephant is smaller than one of her siblings. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that the elephant's 42-year-old mother, Ellie, gave birth late Friday after a two-year pregnancy.

The calf was up nursing within minutes. She'd spent her first hours eating and sleeping.

With her arrival, the zoo's elephant herd now numbers 10.

The calf wasn't on view yet. Eventually, the zoo plans to hold a contest to name her.
