Despite financial concerns in late 2008 and early 2009, the Columbia Mall remains a major shopping center in Columbia. The mall’s parent company, General Growth Properties, struggled financially, and residents speculated that the mall would close in early 2009. Although the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in April 2009, the mall remained open. The company underwent internal restructuring during its bankruptcy period and continues to manage the mall.
Dillard’s, Target, JCPenney and Sears anchor the mall. Stores cover 16 different shopping categories, including cards and gifts, jewelry, housewares, apparel, entertainment, shoes, sports and fitness and electronics.
The mall is open every day. As part of its Parental Guidance Required Program, an adult, age 21 or older, must accompany those 16 years old and younger after 4 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. As part of the Mall Walker Health Fitness Program, there is a three-quarter mile Mallwalker Exercise Trail inside the mall that is open every day. Columbia Mall also supports Show-Me Central Habitat for Humanity and invites shoppers to be part of fundraising efforts and awareness campaigns.
