COLUMBIA — Margaret "Mac Carlton" A. Misiak had a passion for giving back and improving the lives of others.

Mrs. Misiak of Columbia died Tuesday, May 7, 2013. She was 83.

She was born Jan. 11, 1930, in Greenville to Freemont W. and Retha M. (Hughes) Carlton.

Mrs. Misiak began her career as a teacher in a rural one-room school house in Missouri. She moved to Saginaw, Mich., where she raised her four children and served as the director of volunteers at Saginaw General Hospital.

In her free time, Mrs. Misiak pursued a passion for reading that began early in life. She was also an avid fan of NASCAR and Missouri athletics.

Upon retirement, Mrs. Misiak came back to her home state of Missouri. While in Columbia, she mentored medical students and young children. She also donated her time and money to the Ronald McDonald House and other charitable organizations.

Mrs. Misiak spent her last years in Columbia at the Terrace Retirement Home. During her time there, Mrs. Misiak was known by staff and residents as the "in house" pianist because of her love of piano.

Mrs. Misiak is survived by her children, Sue Tuttle, David Misiak and wife, Jackie, and Mark Misiak; a brother, Dub Carlton and wife, Reba; a sister, Kate Shaughnessy and husband, Bill; and four grandchildren, Donald, Danielle, Meghann and Monica Misiak.

A sister, Virginia; a brother, Frank; and a son, Robert, died earlier.
