COLUMBIA — A Sturgeon man was arrested on child pornography charges Monday following a search of his residence.

The suspect was identified as 41-year-old Karl Emery Ball, according to a release from the Boone County Sheriff's Department's Cyber Crimes Task Force. Ball was arrested on suspicion of promoting child pornography in the first degree and possessing more than 20 photographs or one video of child pornography.

The investigation began May 9 when the task force received a report from Microsoft that child pornography photographs had been uploaded to its servers from a computer network in mid-Missouri. The task force secured records that led them to a residence in Sturgeon.

On Monday the task force, along with the Sturgeon Police Department, served a court-ordered search warrant at the residence. Investigators found more than 1,200 child pornography photographs and about 20 videos. After the search, investigators identified a suspect for the possession and uploading of the illegal files.

As of Monday morning, Ball was in the Boone County Jail pending the filing of formal charges by the Boone County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. He has a bail of $125,000 for each of the two charges.

The suspect was allegedly convicted in 1990 in the state of Oklahoma for sexual offenses against a minor, according to the news release.
