Lois Korslund, 83, was professor at MU, Truman State University

COLUMBIA — Lois Korslund enjoyed little things, like going shopping for groceries and necessities, according to her sister, Mary Korslund.

Ms. Korslund died Saturday, June 1, 2013. She was 83. Memorial services will be held at a later date and the inurnment will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove, Iowa.

She was born May 19, 1930, to Edwin and Clara (Foss) Korslund. Ms. Korslund completed eighth grade at Norway Township #1 Country School in Humboldt County, Iowa, in 1944. She graduated from Eagle Grove High School in Eagle Grove in 1948.

After graduation, she attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., from 1948 to 1950. Ms. Korslund graduated with a bachelor's degree in home economics education from Iowa State University in 1952 and obtained her master's in textiles, clothing and television from Michigan State University in 1956. She then received her doctorate in textiles and clothing with a related concentration in business and behavior sciences from Purdue University in 1974. She went on to work as a professor and administrator at MU and Truman State University in Kirksville.

Ms. Korslund was initiated into the National Honor Society as a junior in high school in 1947, was president of the Humboldt County Iowa 4-H Club in 1948 and was the Iowa delegate to Norway through the International Farm Youth Exchange in 1953.

She was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi Academic University Society as an undergraduate in 1952 and was named a distinguished member in 1995. Among the organizations she was involved in were the Omicron Nu Academic Home Economics Honor Society, Delta Zeta Sorority, Fashion Group, American Women in Radio and Television and the Home Economists in Business Organization.

Ms. Korslund was president of the Missouri Home Economics Association in 1980 and was honored as the outstanding ddviser for the College of Home Economics at MU in 1983.  She also belonged to the Quota Club in Kirksville.

She is survived by sister, Mary Korslund of Christiansburg, Va.; her sister-in-law, Charlene Korslund of Eagle Grove, Iowa; her cousin, Brian Rainer of Champaign, Ill.; nephews, John Korslund of Fulton, Md., David Korslund of Amsterdam, Netherlands, Douglas Korslund of Chicago, and James Korslund of Minneapolis.

Her brother, Allen Korslund, and sister, Jeannette Korslund, died before.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to MaGee/Korslund Junior Phi Kappa Phi Scholarship Fund at Truman State University, the Eagle Grove High School Dollars for Scholars Fund or the Mayo Clinic Foundation for Medical Research at St. Olaf College.
