COLUMBIA — Katheryn "Kitty" Maes died Monday, June 3, 2013. She was 94.
She was born Sept. 4, 1918, in Owensboro, Ky., to Harlan and Rosa (Knight) Whitman.
Mrs. Maes was married to Norman Stubbs until his death in 1968. She later married Gorman Maes in 1971.
Mrs. Maes came from a large family and spent her childhood helping to care for her siblings. When her mother passed away after the birth of her youngest sister, Judi, she and Norman raised Judi as their own.
Mrs. Maes and her husband were both members of the Central United Methodist Church and the ACME Sunday school class. She also contributed to the church in repairs, refurbishments and remodeling. Additionally, Mrs. Maes coordinated events and was responsible for cooking bereavement dinners to comfort congregates in mourning. She also managed the "Rack Shack," which sold clothes at a cheaper price for people in need.
After her daughter graduated college and began to start a family of her own, Mrs. Maes spent her time caring for her ill husband until his death in 1968. After Norman passed, she devoted her time to her work and charity until she met Gorman Maes and remarried.
Mr. and Mrs. Maes enjoyed having their families come to their house and spent summers with their grandchildren playing in the yard. Her family, as well as her volunteer work, helped her through her husband's death in 1988.
In 2008, Mrs. Maes moved to Missouri to be closer to her daughter and granddaughters.
Mrs. Maes is survived by her daughter, Norma Wade and her husband, Robert, of Columbia; her sister Judi (Ray) Allen; two granddaughters; two sisters; two brothers; and many nieces and nephews.
Her parents, Harlan and Rosa, her first husband Norman, her second husband Gorman, two brothers and four sisters died earlier.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel, 5330 Washington Ave., Evansville, Ind., 47715. Burial will follow at Park Lawn Cemetery.
