Rockford 'Rocky' Roberts, 57, enjoyed trout fishing and coaching

COLUMBIA — Rockford "Rocky" Roberts died Saturday, June 8, 2013, from cancer. He was 57.

He was born Sept. 22, 1956, in Macon to Arnold and Thelma (Rogers) Roberts.

Mr. Roberts grew up in Moberly and Cairo, Mo., and enlisted in the Navy after high school. After serving six years stationed primarily in Little Creek, Va., he returned to Columbia, where he attended Moberly Area Community College and MU.

Mr. Roberts met his wife, Sandy (Mattson) Roberts, while working for Discwasher in Columbia, and they married on Oct. 12, 1985. 

Mr. Roberts also worked for Extrusion Technologies for several years and retired from Watlow on a medical disability.

He was active with his children, coaching in the Columbia Youth Football League for several years. He also worked with Boy Scout Troop 707 and frequently traveled to gymnastics meets. Mr. Roberts was active in St. Andrews Lutheran Church and helped found a Growing Our Lutheran Faith group, where he served as a confirmation guide.

He enjoyed trout fishing, which he was introduced to by his father-in-law. Mr. Roberts often spent time at Bennett Spring, the only place he felt he could really relax.

Mr. Roberts is survived by his wife, Sandy Roberts; a daughter, Emily West and her husband, Chad, of Columbia; a son, Samuel Roberts of Columbia; a sister, Jo Beattie  of Antioch, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.

His parents; a sister, Sue Roberts; and a brother, Ron Roberts, died earlier.

Visitation will be from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at St. Andrews Lutheran Church, 914 West Blvd. S. Memorial services will follow at the church.
